My grandfather used to love taking me to the firework store. I was given free reign to get whatever firework that I could as long as it wasn’t too big and didn’t cost too much (he reserved the big expensive ones for himself). I bought tanks that shot sparks, smoke bombs galore, and amazing flashing fireworks that when combined with the smoke bombs made for the coolest effects that would make even the most experienced metal band jealous.
Today is a day that that’s synonymous with fireworks, family gatherings, and a sense of patriotic celebration. As the sun sets tonight and the temperature cools (!), we all will eagerly look to the sky anticipating the dazzling display of fireworks. For most of us, fireworks have become the quintessential symbol of Independence Day, each burst of color and light (and smoke bomb) a reminder of our nation’s history and the freedoms that’s the foundation for our democracy.
Enjoy the lights, sounds, smells, and sense of community and connection today.
Happy 4th of July!

And a Happy Fourth to you, Ben!
